[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I don't see how this is a 'wait for a safe turn card' [/ QUOTE ] If the turn is a heart, we have to fold. So I don't want to put another bet in on the flop if I'm going to have to fold the turn anyway. If I wait until the turn, I can fold if it's a heart, and raise to charge FDs if it isn't. [/ QUOTE ] You can fold if a heart falls, even if you put one more bet in here. You can't possibly be tied to the pot, unless it is the A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. Look at it this way: You put extra money in preflop when you have AK with an equity advantage, even though the flop will dramatically change your equity. Why not put money in here, when we have an equity advantage? Buzz [/ QUOTE ] If we raised the flop we will be offering the MP player 7:1 on a call when he already has one in. If we call here and wait for raise a non-heart turn we will be offering him about 3:1 and we will have a lot more equity. I think we get the best of both worlds by waiting until the turn. |

3:1 on the turn? O rly? [/ QUOTE ] Oops, 4.5:1. I am saying that this is the odds if the BB bets and your raise. |

Why not put money in here, when we have an equity advantage? [/ QUOTE ] This is a lot closer to 99 preflop than AK preflop. I think you overestimate your edge given the sheer number of draws and the fact that you are often drawing dead or to 1 out. |

There ya go.
I had a lengthy discussion of this hand with Str8Fish in which I gave him the what for. If he doesn't post his take on it, I'm going to be very disappointed in him. This may result in me abusing my moderatorly powers to change his avatar. Feel free to take suggestions along these lines, or other creative punishments for him, to the NC thread if he never comes through. |

I guess this is a good time to mention the value of taking your time to count the pot correctly.

heh... ok about 5:1... not very close to 3:1 huh? [/ QUOTE ] Right so if we wait to raise the turn the player to my left will still have proper odds to call for a 1 card flush draw. Plus we open ourselves to a 3 bet if we are behind. It looks to me like the turn is a call since we can not protect our hand. HOwever, if you read the SSHE section on two overcard hands. The first overcard hand is a place where Ed decided it was still best to raise for value even though we can not protect our hand. If we think we have over 33%-50% pot equity (depending on whether or not the player to my left will cold call a turn raise) I guess this might be one of those situations? Greg |
