I just bought 'The Best American Science Writing 2006' on impulse. It's a varied collection of topics culled from newspapers and magazines and is easy reading.

Only book ever in school I couldn't lay down;

The Social Animal
Ninth Edition
Elliot Aronson (U. of California, Santa Cruz)

Newly revised and up-to-date, this edition of The Social Animal is a brief, compelling introduction to modern social psychology. Through vivid narrative, lively presentations of important research, and intriguing examples, Elliot Aronson probes the patterns and motives of human behavior, covering such diverse topics as terrorism, conformity, obedience, politics, race relations, advertising, war, interpersonal attraction, and the power of religious cults.

has anyone read 1776 by David McCullough? Someone recently recommended it to me and I am wondering if it is worth the read.

Everything written by David McCullough is worth the read. I don't think anyone writes better historical non-fiction

Moneyball by Michael Lewis (baseball)
The Great Game by Peter Hopkirk (history)

I really enjoyed both.

"The Prize" by Daniel Yergin is a great book on the background to the oil industry.

"Over the Edge of the World" is a very good history of the first circumnavigation of the world, including the politics and intrigue of the era.
