I'm old (> 40) and have a real job as an aerospace engineer. (I have a PhD in aerospace engineering and design guidance & control systems for spacecraft.) I'm also an AC-ist.

Not sure what is my tax bracket (I just enter the numbers into turbo tax and otherwise try not to think about it), but I'm sure I'd be considered 'middle class.'

So yes, there exist some AC-ists who have jobs and pay taxes. Oh, and obviously I think I pay way too much, since I consider anything over 0% too much.

these are marginal. effective is higher since I lose out on many deductions. For example, I support three children and a wife. I get two personal exemptions, not 5.

I suspect we are not talking about the same thing when we are talking about the effective tax rate. What I mean by effective tax rate is a straightforward division of taxes paid by income. Given the bracketed system (even for AMT) the effective rate should be less than the marginal rate.

In any event, since you are talking about marginal rates, my response is as follows:

38/have a job/pay 26% on first 175k and 28% on the remainder for federal (AMT), ~8% state/I pay what the law requires. I'd be happier if it was less. I'd also be happier if there were free poines for everyone, like this one:

i'm sure some of the others are but i distinctly remember that several of the bigger idiots are like 19 and haven't filled out a w-4 in their lives. figures that they would have such naive expectations about the 'market' when their participation in it is limited to spending other peoples' money.
