My point is that from what he was saying it follows that you should always have a kid if you can give it a great life.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, it does not follow. Context matters, and that was not the context of his statement.

Here is what he said in response to my post:

[ QUOTE ]
Yes, it would be bad. People mostly have enjoyable lives. Putting an end to that joy would be a bummer.

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
Refraining from having kids if I could give them a great life would be a shame, but it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Your scenario would be (at least for humans).

[/ QUOTE ]

It is pretty clear he is responding to my hypothetical where the making of babies would cease. He is saying it would be bad because joy would be decreased due to there be less people having joy filled lives. I then point out that according to this value system it would be a bad thing to not have a kid if you could give them a joyous life. He then agreed with me that this is what he was saying, and that it would indeed be a shame if somebody didn't have kids who could give them a great life. He had to agree to be consistent.

It does follow. The context is clear (although apparently not to you).

Rule: it would be bad if we stopped making babies all together because the number of joyful lives would be diminished.

What follows is that if you refrain from having kids who you could give a great and joyous life to you are doing something wrong. It is an obvious entailment of that value system. If you want to give a reason to think it is not please do so, but so far you haven't said anything that suggests remote understanding.

I'm suprised nobody has brought up the economic factor.

We would all die younger as a result. Government would fail at all levels when there aren't enough workers to pay into the system to support the social programs. Those of us still in our 20s and 30s would have to work/earn a living until the day we died for food, shelter, survival.

Doesn't sound pleasant.

If you think it would be neutral, why?

[/ QUOTE ]

It wouldn't matter much, because nothing we do is all that important in the big scheme of things, so I say it would be no worse than if the house fly was unable to reproduce, except for us of course.

Seems like a false assumption to me. Some very large percentage of the world lives in poverty.

It would be a bad thing. The Human race may represent the best chance for life to survive in the Universe. There may be other forms of life out there that is more advanced, but we really don't know the answer to that question now. Life is a miraculous thing. We have the ability to understand the universe, to create great things and to survive. We may have our bad moments, but we have a chance to become something in the Universe, not just on the earth. I think many of us think about improving life for the next generation and making progress for humanity. What a shame if we got wiped out now, shortly before being able to travel to other planets. We represent the earth, we represent humanity and we may be the ones that represent life itself in the Universe.
