Whenever I've played 2/4 or 3/6 I find you can colour up graduallly as you go. There's usually a mix of red/white chips in play,...

This is certainly the case in AC, and it's ridiculous. Seven players limp every hand, each with a nickel, hence each requiring the dealer to make change.

Buy in for a rack or two of white instead.

Yeah, its mostly the casinos fault too. I've had to argue a bit with a cashier to get white chips because she was too lazy to grab the tray with whites in it that was 3 feet away. I've heard other players complain that they had to get all reds because the cashier didn't want to give them whites.

The room I play in is fairly small (17 tables) and most times my NL table ($200 buy-in) is close to the cage. If I get my stack over around $1200 I will usually color up a rack of red for a stack of green. This place doesn't have chip runners, and I don't ask the dealer to do it. I just rack up $500 and then tell the dealer, "I'm going to go color this up." I know all the dealers and they know I'm not taking the money off the game, but this lets the other players know what's going on. I go between hands when there is no line so I don't miss a hand or slow the game down. When I come back I generally break the stack down on the table just in case somebody is curious if it's $500(hey they should be). I'm not even sure if most rooms allow this, but this one does. I just prefer to have more room in front of me when I play NL. OP, just something to keep in mind if you start playing NL.

Now if I'm playing drunken 2-4 limit or something then it's chip pyramid time and I'm taking it to the ceiling ($670 is my record in a 2-4 game).

I'm getting off topic some but some of you had mentioned fills. There have been numerous times where a dealer has asked if I can go buy them a rack of white so they don't have to do a fill. I grab $100 from my stack, go in between hands, bring back a rack, push it to them, they throw me 4 greens, and we are back in business. I should mention since they don't have chip runners they keep a large amount in their racks so whites are usually the first to go.
