we want to at least try protect our set against a variety of gutshot straight draws out there that threaten our hand

Protecting our set? That is one bizare case of MUBS IMO.

If you are only using the cr to build a pot with hands better than a set you are missing out.

Horrendous.

Not capping that river is a crime.

Can we have some more explanation?

If the villian is solid (and maybe I'm reading too much into that read, but I'm thinking 2+2 type player) what does he play this way that we beat?

Now that I typed that and thought a little I might be changing my mind. Assuming solid does mean a 2+2er then QQ and JJ are out since he'd 3 bet pf. AQs or KQs would be possibilities pf (I keep liking KQs as an option since the turn gives him an OESD). QJs is a possibility depending on the table, maybe QTs if is is really loose. There are more AQs/KQs available then QJs so maybe going nuts on the river is correct.

Actually after going through that it might be better to cap the river against a "solid" player since we take a few hands out of his range (QQ, JJ) that beat us. The more I look at the hand, the more I think this guy can't be 2+2 solid, so I think I'm still leaving QQ and JJ in his range.

I wouldn't cap the river.

I would 3-bet the turn though.
