And most dealers will tell you they get tipped better at the lower stakes than they do at higher stakes for this very reason.

[/ QUOTE ]

Not just that reason....it's just that at the 1/2 NL tables you find the idiots who will tip the dealer $5 after winning a $20 pot.

[/ QUOTE ]

lol I see this a lot on Fri sat night. Drunk/inexperienced players do tip more PERIOD. I saw a guy tip the dealer the other day WHEN HE LOST the pot due to a bad river!

These kind of players are just having fun and are not thinking about the long term. who cares? not me.

Not meaning to nit-pick but unless you have any idea of their financial status or motivations for playing poker how can you call anyone an idiot? A $5 tip for a $20 pot may seem excessive to you but if the person has the coin and likes to share the wealth, what is wrong with it?

Most pros do not...why? Because it's all about making money

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, tipping $5 instead of $1 on that $3,000 pot just KILLS my hourly rate.

If it's all about making money, why tip at all? Why even pretend the dealers are actual working people?

I think dealers must be compensated relative to the stakes to diminish the temptation to cheat or skim. If a dealer can increase their hourly earn by 20-fold just by taking one chip from each big pot, then that could be a problem. Maybe not so much in a TV game, but almost certainly in a regular game.

[/ QUOTE ]

At first, this seems like a good point, but as I think about it, I'm not so sure. Sure, a dealer who's getting $5 tips could really boost his earn by skimming a $100 chip occasionally. But if the same dealer is getting tipped $100 every hand has the same reason to skim: to get $100 more. On the other hand, it makes sense that the dealer who gets $100/hand is less likely to jeopardize his lucrative position. Ok, it's back to a good point.

[/ QUOTE ]

The risk is different. The downside of getting caught is losing a $150/hr job v. losing a $3000/hr job.

[/ QUOTE ]

I addressed that in the last two sentences of the post you quoted.

The dealers don't need to be tipped an extravagant amount. They get more airtime than some of the players. Between this show, the Intercontinental Poker Championship and the previous seasons of Celebrity Poker Showdown, I've seen these Palms dealers on TV more than I've seen Layne Flack. That kind of TV exposure is worth big bucks!

There's the orange haired Asian guy, the woman, bald guy, bigger bald guy...

I don't think they're getting any endorsement deals. I could be wrong though. That would be kinda funny to see.

Heh, that's odd.

Actually, I tipped a dealer once for a hand I folded preflop. I usually play 3/6 HE when I go to the casino, and there'll be a lot of people who don't know the common "unwritten rules" about the game. So, one hand, it folded to the SB, who didn't look at his cards and asked the BB for a chop. The BB looks at his hand and says "nah, I'll play." SB looks at his hand and mucks. BB flips over AKo. Dealer says "So you don't chop?" but the BB was defending his actions, saying "Yeah, I'll chop, if my hand is no good." Long story short, the dealer drove home the point that you either do or don't chop, regardless of your hand strength. I gave him a pretty good tip for that. It's important to have dealers who say what needs to be said.

I tip for service. $1 per pot is my standard number for all the limits I have played ($1-3 spread limit up through $20/40). I adjust a bit for dealer quality--I have tipped a bit extra to especially good dealers, and quit tipping a couple of really bad ones.

I doubt I would tip much more if I played higher limits. I think the dealer is performing a similar service.

However, I WOULD be much more likely to give large tips to dealers who did things like point out marked cards.

Also, I think that the convention where you tip for pots you win is stupid. I'd rather just withhold tips until the end and then give the dealer a few bucks based on how well they did their job instead of how lucky I am. I would do it that way if I didn't think it would cause friction at the table.

The problem with witholding tips till the end is that most poker dealers keep their own tips and they change dealers every half-hour. So the guy you tip at the end gets 100% of the money and all the other dealers get nothing even though they dealt to you.
