I would tell the guy my adoptive parents are black, or Jewish, or whatever it is that he hates. Let him feel like a douche for about two minutes, then tell him, "I was just joking, but in all seriousness, if you don't stop saying that racist [censored] I'm going to kick you in the nuts."

If your friend is worth anything he'll take your side.

BTW I've had some similar experiences but with key differences. I've bowled in a couple of different leagues and there are several older guys there who are perfectly agreeable but quite racist. Most notable of these is the owner of the bowling alley, who is very mild-mannered and treats customers with respect - all customers. But a few situations came up where he or a family member had a disagreement with a Mexican or a black guy and in relating the incident to me he would say some pretty foul epithets. Seeing as he was just an acquaintance I just kept my mouth shut and said nothing.

However among people you choose as your friends, or even friends' friends, I think you make a stand.

i hear more racist jokes in my circle of friends than anywhere, and while mostly jewish, it's an extremely multi-ethnic circle.

if he doesn't laugh after saying something racist, then you may be right.
