Also, Kirkland (Costco brand)

Their stuff is excellent. I am currently wearing kirkland signature white tshirts, way better than any brands of white shirts from kmart (hanes, specifically).

Buying anything that says "Shop Rite" or "CVS" on it should come with a red stamp that says "white trash."

i buy CVS laundry detergent. i'm pretty sure the detergent is the same as Tide, although the bottle is not as nice (measuring cup cap is hard to read, etc.)

I was a little confused about what constitutes a generic brand product. I buy almost every Kirkland product out there, but I don't think of it as generic brand, it's Kirkland and I associate it with awesome-ness: here is the wiki definition of generic brand product

If that's the case and I'm reading that right, basically any private label or in-house retailers branded product qualifies (e.g. TJ's).

Yes, I'm using "in-house" as synonymous with "generic." True generics don't really exist anymore - no big yellow cans that say "corn." In many cases, the in house brands are manufactured in the same factory as (or are actually identical to) the name brand, minus the name brand labelling.

Trader Joe's is a little different. As I understand, they buy directly from small manufacturers and pay for the right to use a Trader Joe's label. This is the opposite of in-house/generics, where a large manufacturer sells off label along with full price.

The one category that I will pay for the premium brands is paper products (tissues, paper plates, paper towels, etc.) and trash bags. I am a prodigal user of paper items, and I can't be bothered with the off-brands that fall apart or aren't supersoft. Otherwise I buy the cheapest product that will meet my needs. I do buy diet Coke because I have become addicted to the weird bitter taste that is not duplicated in the other brands and off-brands.

LoL - try Kirkland paper products. They are very good IMO (specifically the toilet paper and paper towels are as good as say Bounty or Charmin).

In general, I make an assessment about what I think can be easily replicated based on what the product is (laundry detergent is a good one) - and then I try the "generic" and if it sucks I will most likely try a competing generic because I'm cheap. If multiple generics suck I will settle on some name brand.
