[ QUOTE ]
Knowing a little bit about everything is far better than being an expert in one or two areas.

This is something that I struggle with myself. I feel that I have a lot of breadth, but I feel like I lack depth even in areas where I am more specialized. Perhaps it's because many areas are too vast and I'll always feel like that.

Obviously there's pros and cons to being a generalist or specialist. Maybe the best strategy is to be a generalist that is able to specialize when needed... Being, say, an only-COBOL programmer in the 80s sets you up for failure if you're unable to adapt.

But in any case, I think you eventually have to pick something to specialize in...in order to be economically viable. Obviously a lot of areas cross over and it helps to actually enjoy what you do for work.

My favorite novel is "A Hero of Our Time" by Mikhail Lermontov, then again, I am partial to Russian literature.

One of my five favourite novels is Mikhael Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita

Yeah thats the only real downside for me, the economic viability of being such a generalist. I can specialize but I find I get to a certain level and then start to get bored. Thats probably why I've never settled on a regular career. Still I've done a lot of things and can hold a good conversation, but real money will probably always elude me. Money is only a part of life though. Health and happiness are far more important.

Thats another problem theres so much to learn that it can get a little overwhelming if you're constantly looking at the big picture. Life can seem a bit directionless at times but I still wouldn't have it any other way. When you meet like minded people who can converse about a similar wide range of subjects, it can be a very inspiring and creative experience.
