In July of last year, Jason Bay did bat .258, yes. He also put up an OBP of .381 and a SLG of .505.

It seem as though you're too hung up on batting average.

If you want inconsistent, you should take a look at Andruw Jones. He started out his career year with a .239/.303/.409 April that included an 0-for-23 streak. For September and October, his OBP was actually below .300. That's what you call a "wicked slump."

Not at all. Just because his OBP and SLG seem good compared to others, compared to himself, they were not good.

avg obp slg

Season .306 .402 .559
June .337 .422 .571
July .258 .381 .505
August .317 .413 .574

* edited to take out ops cause it's redundant

If a players worst month is an .886 OPS, and that is considered as him being very inconsistant, then I would kill to have him on my team.

Iggy,

His April was worse than his July.

His OBP was .402. The greatest deviation from this was -51 points (April). The highest positive deviation was 39 points. That's not inconsistent - that's stastically normal.

His SLG was 559. Once again, his April was the worst, clocking in at -87 points. His highest positive deviation was May (+73) in which his OBP was lower than his season OBP.

H-town might very well have him soon. Got any crappy middle relievers you want to trade to the Pirates? It won't take much...

Iggy,

I know I'm going to sound retarded for saying this because I mentioned this years April sort of, but I really discount April's. Anyone who has ever played baseball knows that beginning of the seasons suck. Most players, especially the good ones, tend to not have great Aprils. That's why you hear about fools like Chris Shelton & Craig Wilson in the beginning of the year and then they fade to black.

Sure, Mike Gallo? lol.

I'd send Preston Wilson AND Jason Lane your way for Bay. I'd much rather have Burke, Taveras, Bay in the outfield than Wilson, Taveras, Lane

Chris Shelton put up a line of .299/.360/.510 last year in Detroit.

Craig Wilson is a career .269/.363/.492 hitter. In fact, Craig Wilson is the second-best hitter on the Pirates team, and he's been the second-best hitter on the Pirates team since Aramis Ramirez was traded. The fact that he's not starting is an indictment of the Pirates regime.

The problem with Wilson is his defense is horrible. He sucks no matter where you put him. He's also great at platooning, but once he hits the starting lineup on a consistent basis, his numbers go down bigtime. I don't know if such numbers can be pulled, but if anyone can, it's you.

I have always been of the opinion though that they should just play him no matter what. It's not like they got anything better. Just waiting on Casey to come back...

My point with Shelton was more along the lines of him batting 326 in April and he won't finish the year over 300 (personally, I don't think he'll even be near). Add in the whole 1 HR in May too.
