To my understanding the main point in this film is two guys, a journalist and his lawyer, getting [censored] up in Las Vegas.
You might say they're searching for the American but I say that's a matter of perspective.

The movie is all about drugs. The title says nothing about drugs.

Wow, I'm way off. In my mind I always though of the description of this movie, fear and loathing, as being explicitly drug related. But I guess not knowing the context of the movie you cannot come to that assumption.

Is this a real drug reference/innuendo? I am not very well versed I guess... Like, would it make sense as a reference outside the movie?

No, it wouldn't make sense. Like i said, you couldn't come to that assumption on the meaning w/o already seeing this movie. From an outsiders perspective, fear and loathing being a drug reference would not make sense.

Most of these don't sum up the plot in the title at all. How about:
The Mummy Returns
How The Grinch Stole Christmas
Shakespeare in Love

How so? If I were asked what the movies I listed were about, I'd basically be repeating the movie title.
