I'm pretty sure ghost-bumping is a bannable (I hope so) if used frivolously (kay we all post stuff and then change our mind now and again), so anyone out there thinking about having fun with this, don't bother.

I don't blame you for doing the search. I think it was truly remarkably silly of you to tell him about it though. What good could possibly come of it? This seems to be a pretty big and, well, kind of strange error in judgment.

Honestly, I would think this sort of thing is much more common when the relationship begins on the internet, too.

And there's always the possibility that he just took this as an easy parachute out. As the saying goes, "Maybe he's just not that into you."

but I disagree, don't see the problem with telling per se - the problem may well be in the way you tell though. Needs care.

Any conversation starting "I did a search for you on the internet today..." from someone you didn't know that well is likely to induce enterprise-under-attack noises in your head, I'd posit.

An infallible way to make it clear that it's a bad idea to tell someone something like this is that there is no upside to it.

Regardless of your opinions on the validity or likelihood of any possible downsides, the utter lack of an upside suffices to make this the kind of thing not to share.

And besides, I really don't think you find it that hard to understand or empathize with the idea that being investigated could be taken the wrong way or make someone uncomfortable.
