the day i was in a meeting and said "let's take this offline" was the day i realized that my soul was dead. that is the only one i ever used, and it is a little bit shorter than "hey, this is outside the scope of this meeting and we're probably the only two interested in it. can we talk about it later?"

throughout history "jargon" has been used to identify members of a group as well as to shorten or soften comments.
q3 is an example of shortening and "offline" is a version of softening a comment. to the extent you know the jargon gives people an idea of how much they would have to explain something to be reasonably sure it was understood. however, the people who are "proactive" and "take meetings" can also just be showing off or imitating someone incorrectly. |
