There were two or three guys on another bike. I accepted the ride because I didn't know exactly where I was, just the general area, and I was happy to not have to wander around semi-aimlessly. The Lao people are generally very helpful and similar things have happened before without incident.

You need to got to youtube and look up Bas Rutten's Self Defense lessons. You could have used that knife to make the assailant slit his own throat.

Wow, sounds like a really bad situation.

I think the lesson here is no matter how friendly everyone seems In a foreign culture you will still always be seen as a walking ATM and an outsider.

I have read many of your posts and I am very surprised at your actions seeing as you seemed like a savvy traveler. Not taking rides from strangers seems like traveling in a third world country 101.
