Well check out Vegastodayandtomorrow.com and on one of the maps, they have the proposed and approved monorail extensions which include to Mcarran, UNLV, west side of strip, downtown and so on. Which is of course what probably should have been done originally instead of having a total of 7 stops all in terrible accessibility spots except for the Hilton and Convention Center.

I know they have a small loyal following but it will not sustain that market much longer.

We differ on this point.

As the Strip grows more and more upscale every year, more and more mod and lower level tourists will be "forced" to go Downtown in order to fit their financial needs.

I think i agree. I say "I think" because the days of 50-100 hotels may not be expected much longer due to inflation, and I don't think increasing rates to match the Mirage will work (Mirage will likely become a bottom-tier hotel on the strip within 5 years). Its an interesting topic for the city planers no doubt.

Just over ten years ago I remember when "The Horseshoe" offered some of the best comps and room rates downtown. The wife and I would only stay there, (some may argue) but you couldn't gamble on a buck anywhere else in Vegas.

Low rollers and high rollers were treated the same. You could sit at a $2 single deck BJ game and the guy next to you was betting and tipping black chips. I remember standing three to four people deep at any of the multitude of craps tables and shooting dice all night on the original $40 I bought in for. Does anyone remember the .25 cent craps table at the main entrance? It's where I learned to play. I was there this past month and saw the same cocktail waitresses that I've seen since I can remember. Yeah, they may not be as hot as The Wynn cocktail servers but where else will they go?

I agree with LVM, Vegas is more inclined to cater to the higher end clientele. Binion's just never seemed to follow suit. Even way back, it didn't matter if you betting $1 or $1,000,000, Binion's always welcomed everyone.

FWIW - I really hope it doesn't disapear into the depths of everyone's memories. I just hope that it's ressurected into a stable good gambling casino it once was. I think it would be a loss to Vegas.

A thought for the new owners of the Binions property: how about a name change? Harrah's owns the Horseshoe name, no Binion is involved in the property... why not re-name it the Mint?

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't know if you were being faceious or not, but I strongly agree that bringing Back the Mint name would be a wonderful idea, IMO. Makes more sense, and would definately bring an additional nostalgia to the property.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm serious. The Mint is mentioned in Hunter Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", the Binion name is attached to, in the mind of the casual gambler/tourist and not the hardcore grinders we are, heroin OD, murder, and other less than savory incidents. At this juncture, the Mint brand might have more cachet.

The whole monorail is a fiasco, but not entirely the monorail or govt.'s fault. Much of the blame you can lay squarely on the casino management. They don't cooperate at all, to their detriment at times.

Dropping off guests at Harrah's and Venetian. The driveways are parallel and one would think it would be easy. Wrong. Drivers from Harrah's have to go all the way back out to Koval and back into the Venetian's driveway.

There is a crosswalk from Harrahs to Venetian. It's from garage to garage, and up a small set of stairs from Harrahs. Even if you know about it, you can't find it.

The casinos have an absurd understanding of their customers, sometimes. They make it impossible to go from one to another, yet not seeming to realize that the other guy's customers can't get to yours, either.

If the monorail had been designed to go from ManBay to downtown, down the center of LV Blvd, much would be different here. A rising tide lifts all boats, and building dams doesn't allow the tide to rise equally.

It will be interesting over the next few years. When all the millionares are taken, who's going after the lower classes?

The first plan for the monorail was down the center of the BLVD. but the taxi commission forced that to change.
Now since it runs behind the east side of the strip the monorail is a non factor in moving tourist up and down the strip.
Even once it goes to the airport I doubt it will have much of an impact. Those staying on the west side of the strip will not want to carry baggage from the stop to the hotel.
I still do not see an easy way of getting people downtown using the monorail. The taxi group just will not stand for it.

I love this quote as well and you are right. When the fad and popularity of the Vegas party scene runs out someday the hotel/casinos will be right back to needing to cater to gamblers to fill up there bazillion hotel rooms and hopefully things will swing back the other way again.
I mean I still love Vegas but when I can't even find a $5 blackjack or craps table when they have ten $15 ones sitting there empty or I can't find a hotel room for under $150 something is wrong.

Its because the casino makes more even with the $15 BJ table unused than if they have a bunch of $5 tables. I think thats common sense, casinos are doing whats best for their bottom line, even if it doesnt appeal to you as a consumer its still what their owners and their investors want to see happen. The future will be low limit off-strip properties for $5 BJ, thats probably the only places you will find it.
