Printers really are the most frustrating electronic device I've ever encountered. And they ALWAYS [censored] up when you need them the most.

not to sound like that retard from those mac commercials. but about a month ago i was living in an unfamilar city and needed to print directions. My printer was in the closet, so i got it out, plugged it into my desktop and tried to print. For some reason my computer wouldn't recognize that I was plugging in a USB cord. This went on with me being ultra tilted for like 10 minutes. Then i picked up my macbook, brought it over, plugged in the printer and printed the directions in like 3 seconds without installing anything. So yeah, I'm gonna blame PC's as the frustrating part.

Quiet Math Nerd. Overly Shy. Mounting Frustrations. Plenty of Nerd Targets.

Over/Under that DBZ just snaps one of these days at takes out an entire math class or the Drama Department?

Easy solution: Do a system restore to the last restore point where the printer was functioning (note: this will cause system changes since that time to be reversed (installed programs for instance.)) To access system restore, hit the Windows button + R, type "msconfig" and launch the system restore wizard from there

Not-so-easy solution: There is a chance that your HD has been corrupted. If that is the case, system restore might not work. You could then try the following procedure:
1) Restart the computer in safe mode (F8 during boot)
2) Try uninstalling the printer driver if there is an uninstall wizard available. If that doesn't work, or the driver can't be removed by wizard, proceed to step 3. If it does work, proceed to step 5.
3) Do a file search on your computer for files and folders with the brand name of your printer. Delete all.
4) Press Windows button + R and type in "regedit". Before you do anything, go to the file menu and export your registry to a backup file on your desktop. Do a search for all entries with the brand name of your printer and delete. CAUTION: Messing with the registry can cause, uh, bad things, so skip this step if you're not quite sure what you're doing and pray that step 3 will do the trick.
5) Restart computer, leave printer unplugged.
6) Download latest driver from manufacturer's website.
7) Install.
8) Success!?

EDIT: All this assumes you're running a standard Windows XP / Vista setup, ldo.

My rage is inwardly directed. Besides, offing oneself is the MIT way - so long as its accompanied by the appropriate equations taking into account wind speed and the like.

I have Vista if that explains even more of my rage.

Most of the other steps have been attempted. Like I said, it gets angry even when I try to uninstall it.

Is there a good way to figure out if the USB connection is working - it used to show up but now it's not despite the new cord but I can't figure out what inside the printer could be busted as far as that goes.

LAME.
