Alison Krauss

To me, this is the answer. If you've ever seen her live, she's got a voice that will send chills down your spine. The only word I can think of to describe it is "pure". She's fantastic. Also very nice. I've bumped into her a couple of times at the gas station I always stop at, and every time she's smiled and said "Hello." in a very neighborly way.

Sarah McLachlan would be a close second.

If you ever tell me where that is, I will relentlessly stalk the both of you. Didn't know she lived here, although that makes sense.

Sarah McLachlan is one of my favorite female artists, but I don't think I'd list her among best vocalists. That's reserved for those like Krauss, prime-time Houston, etc. Others like McLachlan, DiFranco, and Morissette are great - and I'd rather listen to them than Houston - but not top-flight vocalists.

West End and Murphy. She's a station wagon mom, but she is adorable.

Until I discovered country music a few months ago, I never owned anything by female vocalists. But country female vocalists are incredible. My personal fave is Lee Ann Womack. Krauss has a better voice, but I like Womack's songs better.
