Re: pool hustlers
When I was in college, my senior year, I was the best player on campus (still not any good, really). Before my senior year, there were two guys better than me (and interestingly, they both post on 2+2).
I didn't make a living at it, or anything, but I did make some college spending money. The trick was that, most of the people willing to gamble at all, knew that I was better than them. So, I always had to come up with a new, creative gamble. I got pretty decent at shooting left handed. I got very good shooting one handed (I was 95% as good 1 handed as 2...) But I'd always have my eye on making more money during a match. One of my favorite tricks was, if I was one game away from winning, shooting at the final ball (8 or 9 ball depending on the game), I'd make a deal that I'd miss the shot on purpose if they'd pay me X (X was usually half the bet...if we were betting $20, I'd miss the 9 ball if they paid me $10). The trick was always to be creative. It was fun, but like others here have said, the money paled vastly compared to poker. Josh |

Re: pool hustlers
Many posters comparing billiards to poker. Do you consider billiards more difficult because of the competition? Can you suffer prolonged losing streaks in pool as in poker? Lastly, isn't there better money to be made in pool tourneys than cash games???

Re: pool hustlers
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] also finding a good supply of fish is next to impossible for most hustlers. If you go to the online poker room open to US players, in my area, it's mostly the same guys playing eachother, and always giving and taking chips and negotiating, so most of them break about even, except they lose to the rake. Some guys seem to consistently take the best of it, but they don't get way too much action. [/ QUOTE ] Fixed [/ QUOTE ] yea not really also the hustler = one of the greatest movies ever, watch it now - only gambling movie that's POSSIBLY better is casino, but i doubt it |

Re: pool hustlers
The Hustler is a must-see. Inside Out (1987) was also good. Elliot Gould played an eroding businessman/degenerate gambler who eventually lock himself in his apartment betting on sporting events. Great performances, and Gould was terrific.

I think the world champ would win like not even 200k usd...i could be way off but its not in the millions guarenteed. Its also a really cutthroat thing to do for a living as once you get to a certain level anybody can beat anybody on any given day. Think of playing the tournament pool circuit like a 1k sng. Everyone there knows how to play and knows their [censored] (ICM and push/fold yada yada). The very best players will still win more overall but it could go either way and not much of an edge seperating them |

Re: pool hustlers
The book The Hustler is fantastic.
Fun stuff starts in Chapter 3, which is the opening scene in the movie. Enjoy... Lots of pages left out, just a preview of the book. Worth finding and reading tho if you like this sorta thing. BB |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] i need to watch the hustler [/ QUOTE ] I watched it again recently, and (has been often stated) it's just a great, great movie. Paul Newman, George C. Scott, and Jackie Gleason each gave fantastic performances. I suppose it's a bit dated, but it captures the essence of gambling better than any other movie in the genre. [/ QUOTE ] Exactly, only I'd say it captures the essence of gambling better than just about any other movie I can think of in the genre or no. For a nearly 50 year old movie, it's amazingly fresh. |
