Why doesn't OP have a US bank account? That seems odd.
If it was an $8k check or something I can understand how someone might steal the check, make a fake ID with that name, and then cash it. But for only $400 it seems more trouble than it's worth. Also, does OP have a common name like Doug Jones or something? Could that somehow explain how this could happen? For those who don't know: Cincinnati and Medina aren't exactly next door to each other. At least 3 hours apart, maybe a little more. Why OP assumes everyone on 2+2 would know where Medina is (much less that it's in Ohio also) I'm not exactly sure. I agree with the others that you should contact the bank/institution that cashed it. Maybe some weird identity theft going on here? |

I didn't know that cheques were based simply on the honour system.
It's simple, the bank that cashed it owes you the money, and the bank that Party drew it on owes you the money. They are both liable, as far as I know. Start with the one that cashed it. |

I am slightly confused.
John Doe can take a check, "Pay to the order of: George Bush" scribble out a signature and deposit it in John Doe's bank account? |

[/ QUOTE ] well, it would be 'pay to the order of: john doe' and scribble a signature. this is usually allowed at banks when you have an account there, since they can wait for checks to clear |

Hey, thanks for all the replies, I was at work. I do have a regular bank account at 5/3rd. Mail check was the only way to cash out of PP if I remember correctly. I am going to contact both PP and US bank where it was cashed Monday. Also there are what appear to be account numbers on the back of the check, so I think the guy is screwed. Thanks again all.

Random person signs over to himself by writing 'pay to random person' then scribbling the name of the person the check was made out to below. |

I did this all the time when I was little and had a paper route with my sister. She would send me to the bank with all the checks we collected and I would sign 'Pay to the order of <my name>' then her name, then my name and give them to the teller if she forgot to sign them or wasn't around when I went to do it. Never had a problem, not sure why its so hard for people to understand.
