As far as alcohol goes, in the middle ages they drank beer and grog as a primary source of water, right?

I'm pretty sure the alcohol content of middle ages ale was closer to 0% than the 5% of today. (Rock on European Environmental History 101!)

I just watched this awesome documentary on beer. beer was even what the founding fathers etc, drank exclusively rather than water because the water was full of crap. There were 3 sometimes 4 "degrees" of beer, the one that was drank everyday, was like you said, pretty much alchohol free, maybe 1% or lower for everday use/children, than there was normal beer to be drank by grown ups on a regular basis, and extra strong brew for celebrations. I drink a lot of water, but I also sweat a lot. it curbs my appetite, etc.
