I think you have to be worried about your step father asking for money through your mom. I would help your mother out and help her out in the future if she needed it but always be there to supervise use of the money so the idiot stepfather doesn't use it.

If what you say about your relationship with her is true, i'm leaning towards not giving her much, especially not thousands towards dental work. Though i think you maybe coulda broken the news in a slightly easier manner, but apart from that im in agreeance.

it's not like she needs this money or she'll be evicted or starve. she wants it to get cosmetic improvements to her teeth. would you give your mothers money for breast enlargements?

if you give her this money, you're going to get hit up by every low life relative you've got. you should keep quiet about how much money you make to try to prevent these requests in the future.

Nah [censored] it don't do it now, you're already tried to be a tough guy. It's worth it so she doesn't ask for money constantly. Get her teeth fixed for Christmas or her birthday or something.

OP I think you're play is perfect.

My parents were well off when I was growing up (my dads side has money) and my Mom's family was always trying to scrape money off them.

10 years later they refused to move out of a house my parents were paying for (they had not paid a dime in rent in about 5 years) so my wife and I could have a place to live after our first child was born.

Fast forward 6 years, and my parents were told specifically not to attend my Grandparents funerals.

If you are worried that your family will start coming to you for money it is best to nip it in the bud if you aren't close.

Just make sure you don't loan money to your uncle for a new house.
