is the word "negro" ok to use?

I don't get it. I thought that the word "negro" was a bad word but one of my university course books indirectly tells me it's OK to use.

In the book titled, Essential English Grammar by Philip Tucker, on page 47 it lists this:

Does this mean that the word "Negro" is OK to use? I honestly believe that everyone/race is equal and special so I don't want to be using any words that can seem racist.

This is an American made grammar book so if it uses the word "Negro" so liberally, it must mean the word is fine to use right? Furthermore, the fact that my university sponsors this book means that the content in the book is quality. Can I use this word in front of African Americans?

Dear Eric:

Every time you open your mouth - or type something over the intertubes - it's possible that someone might be offended and call you a racist, sexist, [s]homophobic[/s] whateverist.

Therefore, if you truly wish to not be racist or offend anyone, you should never say anything at all. Throwing your computer off a cliff and supergluing your tounge to the roof of your mouth are just some of the possible ways of accomplishing this.

Not recommending, just saying.
