10 minutes is impossible unless you are an experienced speed walker. [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: Could you speed walk a mile in 10min??? Drunk Prop Bet.
Ok just got done. It was kinda fun trying not break into a jog and stay in some sort of walking form.
~13:15 Which is a little bit quicker then what I expected. I have zero experience with speed walking, so I just winged it. I'm sure with proper form, etc I could take a minute off that, but it would take a bit of training to get below 10 minutes. I have kinda short legs though so that might make a big difference...no clue how much of a difference though. So, for the OPs friend with no speed walking experience I'd say this is impossible. |

I doubt I could go much faster then 15 minute miles without breaking into a jog. [/ QUOTE ] This is complete bs unless you're a midget or something. I've been running a mile with a group of people for a while, and I often have to run back to encourage the people who are still finishing their mile. For a lot of the people I can walk next to them at a semi brisk pace without really pushing myself and they still finish with a 12 minute mile or so (they're still "running" at their normal pace) I think it's actually a pretty good bet assuming you're not going to be redic nitty about if he lifts his foot once or something. A 10 minute mile is super slow, but power walking is pretty slow for normal people too. edit: you've replied and proven that you can go faster then 15. |

doesnt sound like hes in good enough shape to do it. I think it would be damn hard for out of shape people. I think any reasonably in shape person could do it tho.

Walking at an average pace, it takes 20 minutes to walk a mile.

Re: Could you speed walk a mile in 10min??? Drunk Prop Bet.
klompy - I pretty much run a 10 minute mile now because I suck and am out of shape.
This is NOT walking speed. Big enough difference between 12-13 vs 10 minute mile. Here's what will happen in the prop-bet if they go to a track: 1st lap - 2:56 2nd lap - 3:10 3rd lap - 3:21 4th lap - Forget it. He gives up and collapses and complains how much his calves hurt him from trying to go that fast with that kind of form. |

You can't run worth crap but can run 10 min/mile, so that means nobody in shape could walk it. Good analysis. Most people in good shape would have trouble running slow enough to maintain 10 min/mile without shuffling along in a pseudo jog. So, can't we also generalize for everyone and say 10 min/mile is NOT running speed? |

Re: Could you speed walk a mile in 10min??? Drunk Prop Bet.
I'm never going to say impossible, but as someone who walks at least two miles every day, I would say it's damn close to impossible. A normal healthy person focused on walking briskly is going to clock in something like a thirteen-minute mile. After that, it's more efficient to jog; walking faster than that is just going to be painful.

I'd like to change my vote to impossible. Tommy Lee Jones can explain...
