Re: when has a band \"sold out\" ?
Unless you're planning on paying for "your band"'s daily expenses, shut it.
I say this being a musician and music freak. |

Says who? Political leaders have a perceived duty to the public, as do artists. [/ QUOTE ] Who defines what that duty is? Their fans? Their parents? Their country? God? |

Re: when has a band \"sold out\" ?
hey who let the Marxist in this thread? Politics is that way.
I think Deorum and Wook pretty much nailed it. Harping about a band "selling out" is pretty much a "hey look at me I'm cool" tactic. That being said, it does happen. When a band with a unique sound has a huge shift in sound (and sometimes attitude) in order to sell records, it's a big let down to a lot of real, honest fans. The fans should just accept it for what it is, but it's still a bummer. Usually, though, it's a really good band just getting more popular, because, shocker, they're really good. The hipster/punk rocker/hardcore kid gets really defensive about it because, sadly, liking that band is a major part of how they identify with themself. |

Re: when has a band \"sold out\" ?
It's tough to think Metallica sold out, considering they made a musical decision that destroyed they're popularity. If they kept making same old same old speed metal, that would be closer to selling out. However, watching Avril Lavign play Fuel for Metallica's MTV Icon award show almost made me cry.
Sellout nowdays simply means that the small nitch of a fan base is jealous that other people like 'their' band. It's hard for people to realize that popularity doesn't equal sellout. Hell, a girl once told me that Tool sold out. A band that with each album, runs further and further from the mainstream. Yeah, I pooped in her hair product. |

The Cars and Seals & Croft never sold out! [/ QUOTE ] My sarcasm meter is off so I am assuming you are not kidding but.... Oh never mind - Seals and Croft gave it away. Ric Ocasek is allowed to do anything he wants to just because..... We'll forgive Heatbeat City Off topic - How did Ric Ocasek allow "The New Cars" considering he owns all the rights???? |

She might not realize that Nevermind sat on the shelf for a year before it hit big. [/ QUOTE ] Not true. It was released September 24, 1991. It was Gold by October 28, 1991 and Platinum (1 million sold) by November 28, 1991. It was #1 by January 2002. Smells Like Teen Spirit became a huge MTV hit almost immediately. You might be thinking of Pearl Jam's Ten, which was released a month before Nevermind, but didn't hit gold until February 1992 and platinum until May 1992. |
