[ QUOTE ]
Anyway, sorry for your loss obv. How are your cats doing? [/ QUOTE ] The three cats my dad and I got for the office are doing great. I don't know if they're catching any mice, but they are cool pets. They're about eight months old now, and really starting to develop distinct personalities. One of them tries to climb up my legs even when I'm standing up. |

Re: the family dog got put down today.
Put down the cat in my avatar several months ago.
She had cancer and only had a few weeks. I confirmed that the procedure to remove her lower-jaw followed by radiation and stuff like that to try to fight the cancer would have been way to awful for her. My sister (a veterinarian) agreed with me and said that if it was one of her cats she would just let the cancer take its course instead of the super-drastic procedure which only had a chance of successfully thwarting it. So I'm caring for my cat every day and occasional steroid shots help her do pretty well for much of the stretch. Just as playful and affectionate as ever really even though her mouth looked not so hot with the growing tumor. But eventually she eats less and less (too much pain) and I have to put her down because even the steroids aren't helping her anymore and she's suffered enough. This was a really sucky time for me. Pretty hard. After it finally ended I had the sense of relief that I guess I was expecting. 6-8 weeks or so caring for your dying pet is not the easiest thing in the world. My sister as a house-call vet (for those with enough money to shell out the bucks to bring the vet to their home) has to get to know her clients a bit better than most vets so she feels more emotionally involved when she puts down an animal and it can really get to her. Honestly I have no idea how she does it. One particularly bad week where she put down 3 dogs in a row with pretty emotional families really threw her and she was half-ready to just give it up. taking some time off instead help her get re-charged though but I believe that stuff is still really difficult for her. No matter how successful she is at staying mostly emotionally detached it still gets to her pretty hard I think. In the meanwhile, my GF is a nurse at a hospital. Dealing with patients who actually die and their grieving families isn't something she has to do everyday. But even just a few times a year is probably more than I would want to try to handle. |
