This reminds me of an anecdote I heard at the beginning of a lecture on imperialism.

The professor giving the lecture began by saying that when inivited to a party he inevitably got asked the question "So..the British Empire was a good thing...wasn't it?"

He said that when asked this he just stared into the distance and tried to think of how to change the subject...

That is a beautiful fireplace, isn't it?

If that's an argument for Rome then I suspect you didn't know Julius Caesar was mocked for his youthful homosexual indiscretions by his troops the entire march back to Rome after the conquest of Gaul. And of course Julius Caesar was hardly the most degenerate of Romans.
