Re: any writers?
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Not really sure about the feedback. I've written things over the years but never seem to finish them. I like writing better than reading. Did you know that you can publish any book you write, though? My mom has written two books and published them via "xlibris.com" I believe. She's written a book called Norwegian Wood which is (blatant plug) a fictional account of real events that took place in Norway during WWII. I think it cost her ~$500 to get it published. It's print-on-demand publishing, though. So you won't find it in stores. But if you go to Barnes & Noble or whatever, you can request it and they'll print order it in about 2 weeks. Thought you might like to know, in case you ever finish one worthy of binding! I'd love to some day, but right now, poker is my clock-killer! Good luck. [/ QUOTE ] I'm still not decided on whether cheap self-publishing is the best or worst thing to happen to the literary world. On the one hand, I think it's wonderful in a case where someone has written a technical volume that would have a niche market. On the other hand, it allows any rube with a PC and $300 to publish their crappy psuedo-pornographic harlequin-rejected romance novel. I also worry that the ease of self-publishing could lead writters with publication-worthy work to shy away from taking the time to submit to publishers. The result would be a work that could possibly be a best-seller being stuck with triple digit sales because the author thought it would just be easier to use iUniverse. Self-published books are very rarely stocked in bookstores because they are almost always Print-On-Demand and the bookseller is forced to take on the full risk of stocking the book, since it will not be returnable. [/ QUOTE ] Tony, are you just thinking this to yourself? lol. Why did you type all this??? |

Re: any writers?
[ QUOTE ]
As for getting feedback - maybe a college course, a writer's network in your area, etc. [/ QUOTE ] Feedback is key. If you can bounce 10 chapters or so, one at a time (giving you time to improve and incorporate in between), off an expert disinterested editor, and if you can take the comments in a constructive way (and not "know better"), it will improve you lightning-fast. I'm thinking about writing a novel next. Once I get some of it on paper, I'm going to look for someone to bounce it off of for comments. Editors work cheap (unfortunately for them), so you should be able to find a good one cheaply to put in some hours with you. |

Re: any writers?
[ QUOTE ]
Looks like we agree. Lord of the Flies definitely does use some fairly difficult words, I remember it has vicissitudes in it (dunno why I remember that, probably I didn't know the word before then) and some others. [/ QUOTE ] Ben Graham used that damn word, "vicissitudes" like 200000 times in the Intelligent Investor. So weird... I found it distracting. And fantastic. |

Re: any writers?
Im kinda grunching, because it's almost bedtime, but I have tons of ideas, chapters, and short stories I'd love to share, not to mention poetry... if that's safe to do on OOT.
Let's get something together, maybe some pm'ing or something. Writing will be my career in one way or another, and I'd love some constructive criticism. PM me. |

Re: any writers?
I was a creative writing minor in school. Those classes were far and away my favorites. Lately though it seems the only writing I do is on this dumb message board.
I think I will start writing again though. Hey, it's a new year, time for new things, right? If you need any more people to bounce stuff off I'm always down to talk about writing. It's nice to discuss writing in English instead of computer code; some of my favorite conversations are the ones I have with a friend who was an English major. |

Re: any writers?
Stephen King's On Writing is incredibly good, has some memoirs and stuff as well as very good writing advice (I don't write, but it seems like good advice) is pretty short and quick to read

I started a thread to see what people thought of self-publishing, but it busted. |

Re: any writers?
id like to write screenplays but the problem is that i suck. it also seems that the screenplay business makes producers rich and the writers poor.
im in the process of writing a story about a prophecy which ive read to others who find the story fantastic so far, but i only have the beginning written and dont know where to go from here. |

Re: any writers?
Alright, after getting a few PM's back I've decided to see how it goes posting stuff here for people to look over. I'll give it a shot and see how I like it
I wrote this last night and wasn't really happy with it. Kevin Towne is a pussy thoughts? also my grammer in many ways sucks. Ill look to take a class in the near future. |
