You really can check behind the turn here... If you're going to bet/fold, I would prefer checking behind on the turn and calling a river bet on non-scary rivers. You still put in the same action, but you get to showdown..

i think betting flop and checking turn gives us more control over how much $$$ goes into the pot.

Check either flop or turn. I've seen this sort of situation posted soo much recently - when you have position with like top pair or an overpair in a 3bet pot, don't bet unless you are snap-calling a check-raise.
