Oil is a finite resource. Im pretty sure no one who is informed and works within the industry believes otherwise.

[/ QUOTE ]
ya finite, but it will never actually run out, as there will be new discoveries of oil and when the supply gets really low, prices will be so high no one will use it and therefore it will not deplete anymore.

[/ QUOTE ]

maybe true, but hundreds of millions of Chinese and Indians and for that matter the rest of the underdeveloped world will not have access to the next technology after the US and Europe no longer rely on oil. its going to be an ugly transition stage to say the least.

Im not saying one or the other is true.. but did you even read the headline?

Cheap Oil to Last, "Doomsday" Fears Overblown, Author Says

Even if the world wont look like Mad Max in 30 years, the fact is that the supply is finite. Gotta get the ball moving on a new infrastructure sooner or later. Sooners probably better.

Alternative energy for cars is already developed and ready for commercialization, just being stopped by oil companies and lobbyists who are protecting their industry. Find other things to worry about such as the whereabouts of Gary Coleman and the members ABBA.

Once people get over irrational fears of science/weapons, nuclear power is the future of energy supply.

We'll develop alternatives when it is worth it. Currently, it's not. How hard is this to understand?

[/ QUOTE ]

Problem is, a lot of poor and middle class people will suffer until it's 'worth it.'

Whew! Glad i'm not one of those guys!

A huge oil crisis has been predicted for years.

I remember in economics class hereing all the time about someone who wrote a best seller in the 1970s predicting oil would be scarce by the 1990s.

Bottom line is the market usually adapts.

Supply drops.

Prices rise.

Demand lowers as market shifts to lower fuel usage.

Market delivers alternatives to oil based transport and industry, such as hydrogen power cells and solar.

???

Profit.

For the record, ive never been worried about the oil running out. I believe in entrepreneurship and the ingenuity of mankind.

I could have quoted this about 20 times already in this thread... but, seriously, have you guys never heard of Easter Island?

In above post I pointed out that we need to get the ball rolling on a new infrastructure. What most of you clearly dont understand is that our societies entire infrastructure is dependant on oil. Oil doesnt only drive our cars and heat our homes, every product you use, every edible you consume is dependant on oil. We cant wait for the life blood of our current infrastructure to run out before we start thinking about our new one. Well, we can but the results wont be pretty.
