No, the initial offer clearly states you get $X for Y FPPs.
Many poker sites (that I know of) have sign up bonus that is awarded instantly.

Actually, when you look in the store this is the exact description given (cut and pasted):

$285 VIP Reward Bonus

It's called a bonus there. It doesn't say you get cash, it says you get a bonus. When you click on the item to get further information, it very clearly says they'll credit your account with the cash after you earn a certain number of points.

The freeroll thing is another issue altogether and it is truly misleading.

When you purchse it from within the Stars software it has a link to the actual item: http://www.pokerstars.com/fpp/store/...l/vip-bonus-1/ that has the full explanation of how the bonus works.

not to belabor the point, but the page that the OP sent us to http://www.pokerstars.com/vip/platinum/ very clearly says "Visit our FPP store for complete details" about the bonus. if you click the words "FPP store" in that line on the page, it takes you to the store where there is full disclosure of the details. details which are not necessary to put on the promotional page.

the details are standard bonus material, just like a deposit bonus, where you have to clear it by earning base level VPPs. maybe i'm just being a lawyer, but come on people! read!
