For those saying that poker is not a sport, how would you define a sport?

(Note, I am not saying that I disagree with you)

Wikipedia:
Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Used by itself, sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors. Sports are used as entertainment for the player and the viewer. It has also been proven by experiments that daily exercise increases mental strength and power to study.

Fwiw, if it were to get chosen, the purest event with the least luck would have to be used (whilst still having a mass appeal) - a heads up deepstack PL holdem tourney where rounds are played best of 3 (at least) would be best imo.

[/ QUOTE ]

Why a tourney, and why only one game? I think we would want to find the best all-around player.

My vote is to have players playing 6 tables of HORSE (2 full ring, 1 6 handed, 1 heads-up, 1 SNG, 1 MTT); 3 tables of 2-7 TD (cash, SNG, MTT), and 3 tables of 5 card draw (cash, SNG, MTT). All 12 tables would be played simultaneously on 3 monitors, with the horse games offset so that all 12 tables would be on different games at the same time. This is the best test of true poker ability, IMHO.

Well, the commissioner of the World Series of Poker (and therefore the most important man in the world of poker) said poker was a sport "because it's on ESPN and the S stands for Sport".

Which puts it right up there with hot-dog eating. I haven't seen any dog-jumping this year though, is it out of season ?

This is the correct answer. Poker is clearly a sport.

Also riding-lawnmower racing, which can be seen from time to time on ESPN8 - "The Ocho".
