Re: Uncomfortable carrying large sums of money...please help
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Why don't casinos band together to create a sort of large-sum bearer note that they would all honor and exchange for cash, so that it would be much easier to carry around and hide on your person? [/ QUOTE ] In the US, private currency is illegal. It's probably illegal in other countries too. Governments suck yo. [/ QUOTE ] Actually, in the US, private currency is legal as long as the currency providers (casinos) provide for the tracking and taxation of all transactions that happen with this private currency. I'm betting you never heard of Ithaca Hours? |

Re: Uncomfortable carrying large sums of money...please help
[ QUOTE ]
I admit I am being paranoid. I don't think nittiness or testosterone has anything to do with it though - this is a serious amount of money to me - $2000 is almost my takehome pay for a month at my regular job. And I have to admit I have done stupid careless things - one time a few years ago I dropped my wallet in the middle of a casino floor in AC and walked about 20 feet away without noticing I had done it, only to be given it back by a member of the cleaning staff. Now I keep better control over my wallet obviously, and it is not when I am in the casino that I worry, but other times on my trip, when I am out walking around town, driving around a city, etc. Does anyone feel comfortable leaving several thousand dollars in a low rent motel room (one without a safe)? [/ QUOTE ] Do not keep your money in your wallet. Keep it in your front pocket or a belt or ankle thing. (Go for the front pocket and get used to it for your size roll.) |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Is this not a legitimate concern? I guess the ankle wallet is a thought, I have never even heard of that before though. [/ QUOTE ] Its not a legitimate concern because nobody else except for you knows you have a large sum of money on your body, unless you were followed from the poker room ala Greg Raymer... [/ QUOTE ] Well then, you might as well lock thread. Btw TT, your answer leans towards contradiction. [/ QUOTE ] Of course its a contradiction, because at that point it doesn't matter if you have the money on you or not - people who witnessed your win will know your flush. [/ QUOTE ] Lol, have we been drinking? |

I'll never understand people who measure their manliness by how much money they carry and how nonchalantly they wave it around. There's a lot of that creeping through in this thread.

Re: Uncomfortable carrying large sums of money...please help
I guess it's all relative (I play much larger limits), but my threshold is anything over 30k. More than that, I too start to feel uncomfortable and that I have too much money on me.
I'll usually wire funds to the casino where I'll be playing before I leave for the airport. If it's a cardroom I travel to regularily, I'll just take 5k chips with me back and forth on the plane (chips won't cause you any problems with airport security and they are less bulky and easir to carry). When returning home, I just have the casino issue me a check. Yeah, that means I gotta run it through my bank, but I'm an honest guy when it comes to taxes.. |

If the hotel does not have a safe, you're better off taking it with you. And I've heard some stories about how unsafe those safes really are. In any event, I don't use them. Although I WILL use the lock boxes available in casinos. Those are safe. Another tip is if you feel nervous cashing out, you'll look nervous and perhaps draw attention to yourself and become prey to anyone looking for an easy mark. Although your concern is legitimate, many of the posters are correct that 2k really is no big deal in most casinos and cardrooms. I feel naked if I don't have at least 2 to 3 times that on me at all times, and I've never been followed or mugged, or even looked at funny. Just act like it's no big deal (it isn't), and you'll be fine. |

I don't know where you live or how you like to dress but I would suggest cargo shorts or pants.
Right before I moved to Las Vegas I bought my first pair of tan cargo shorts (because that is what the store had in shorts). They turned ut to be a Godsend. 4 pairs of pockets in the front(better to avoid pick pockets) and two of those are zippered. Put your wad in one of the zippered pockets and you don't have to worry about it falling out. There is also no shame in counting or gathering your winnings in a bathroom stall or the payphone area (nice one at the Wynn). |

Re: Uncomfortable carrying large sums of money...please help
Chill,
First of all - if you are not comfortable carrying 2k around for fear you will drop it or be mugged and that it's a very significant amount of money for you, perhaps it's so significant you should not be gambling it. I understand, it's poker, I have an edge, etc., but your post seems to suggest that losing that money (whether in a poker game or via a fluke occurrence) would be very rough for you. If that's the case, move down. If that's not the case and it really is just that you're not used to the cash, well, there are some things you can do. First, any casino in AC (I think you play there) like the Borgata or Taj allow you to create a players account - you can simply deposit the money and withdraw chips, etc at any time. Some places do have safe deposit boxes, but they can be difficult to get unless you play high limits. Or simply don't worry about it - 2k in hundreds should fit comfortably in any wallet. If you've never been mugged before, the fact that you have 2k on you won't make it any more likely unless u are fanning yourself with Franklins at your local Starbucks. It's just something you get used to - gamblers need to carry cash sometimes, simple as that. If someone at a casino makes you feel uncomfortable, get an escort. Valet parking is another option as well. Jeff |

I remember the first time I lost $1,000 through a stupid mistake 9yes, it has happened more than once), it felt the same as dropping two racks of red - I felt like crap for a few hours, then i got over it. But if I lost that amount and it wasn't easily replaceable I'd feel really sick. Nobody should gamble if they aren't prepared to lose what they came with. PS - hope your trip home was good.
