Tell him to play lots of hands, and with some people just telling them what to do isn't enough; they need to know why they're doing it. I guess getting him a couple of poker books to read first might be a good idea.

This guy doesn't read, so books are a no go. pretty much i'm trying to get him to be a breakeven player and even thats difficult

This tells me he either isn't listening or has a fundamental grasp that is hanging him up mentally. You might try a couple of things:

A) Play him Live HU at the kitchen table or whatever. After you get done beating the tar out of him he should be good and frustrated and also have some questions for you. If he doesn't, give up because he really isn't interested in learning at this point.

B) Have HIM tell YOU how to play poker. Run him through the complete gambit of questions on Pot Odds, Equity, Stacks, Outs, Position, Reads, etc. Note his replies but DON'T comment or try to correct him until after he's answered all the questions. This will give you a very good idea of where his head is at and also what his major hangup(s) are.
