Wasting a lot of time correcting stupid people is probably what caused a lot of my white/gray hairs. Therefore, I try to stay away from it. However, if the topic is sports, I can't help myself. I do not care if it is a complete stranger. If that guy/girl says something that is not right, I will definitely correct them. This is particularly true in baseball, which is my area of obsession/expertise.

For example, I was playing at the casino a few weeks ago and they had a baseball game on. With one out and a runner on third, the batter hit a short bloop fly ball to right and the rightfielder made a nice sliding catch. The [censored] runner on third base did not score because he was halfway up the line instead of tagging up. When I commented about the runner screwing up and costing the team a run, this jackass at the table chimes in. "He did exactly what he is supposed to do because if the ball drops he needs to be able to score and he won't if he's tagging up." Wow.

Anyway, don't [censored] with me about baseball unless you absolutely know what you are talking about.

Im not a big baseball guy, but isnt that a very subjective call?

[/ QUOTE ]

also don't know anything about baseball, but given that it was a "nice sliding catch" it sounds like a debatable situation unless the runner definitely could have scored either way by tagging up.

i never bother correcting people i don't know, it's too much work and most people don't care if they're wrong anyway.

Ya, thats my point, it was a shallow fly ball to right field, I just dont see how anyone even if he didnt leave the base to begin with can score. Actually, I dont see how the guy at the casino was in the least bit wrong. but, Im no expert like that guy says he is.

In any case isn't that the responsibility of the base running coach and not the player?

Me - <playing video poker>

Friend - Why did you hold four to a flush instead of the pair of tens?

Me - Because it is the best play.

Friend - I would have held the tens.

Me - Holding four to a flush there has the highest return. It's straight math, can't be a matter of opinion.

Friend - I don't know, I would have held the tens.

Me - ...

also, isn't it generally the third base coaches call in situations like this? doesn't the runner just listen to what he says?

gus,

I generally just ignore it except when it's someone saying something incorrect about sports while we're watching a game together.

This happens just about everytime I go to a casino with a group of friends. I always end up correcting them (my friends), and always end up wishing I hadn't. I should just let them dream that they're the first person who's smart enough to beat simple odds in a game.

I don't think I'd ever bring it up with someone I don't know though.

not if the runner is on third b/c there's no advantage to be gained from having a headstart on the ball if the fielder is not able to come up with a catch. he will score no matter what....unless he for some reason is way off the base when the catch is made.
