Re: I don\'t believe stories about how much people win. Do you?
But keep in mind that the people who post here saying, "I never deposited, won a freeroll for 5 cents, and today I'm a millionaire" are proud of that, for good reason. Those who lose (an estimated 90% of poker players) are not going to tell you here.

Sounds like a pretty impressive story if in fact it is true

Re: I don\'t believe stories about how much people win. Do you?
I had 1$ in August 05, i played 2/4 cents NL and never redeposited.4k short of 100k now.So, it's definitely possible to earn 500k at that time (i am too conservative and don't move up till i am hugely overrolled).Don't know if this particular story of OP's friend's friend is true, but it certianly could be.

I would think its an exaggeration too. If he really won that much he wouldnt feel the need to brag about it. Most people that feel the need to brag about how much money they have usually dont have that much of it...

Re: I don\'t believe stories about how much people win. Do you?
I deposited $100 in August of 2004 and have never deposited again. I didn't have much of a concept of bankroll management, and there were several times in the beginning when my last $5 was in a SNG/MTT and I had to (and did) cash to stay non-busto. I ran well at the right times and eventually built my roll to about $500 and started excersizing bankroll management, after which point going busto could not really happen.
I think the hardest part of building the $50 into $500k would be in the beginning where it is almost impossible to be properly rolled for any game with such a small amount of money. |

Never used my own money to play this game. Play money sales > Bankroll. Lots of people for which this is the case.

Re: I don\'t believe stories about how much people win. Do you?
While getting his roll up to $500K is far-fetched (though not impossible, depending on how good/lucky the guy got), the never depositing angle is pretty standard.
I started playing with a free $10 that The Gaming Club gave me. I had never played poker for real money and had barely played for play money. I played some $10 buy-in (I think) PL Omaha (go figure, for a beginning) and ran it up to $100. I have never put any of my own money into poker and while I play low stakes, so my bankroll is nothing compared to many 2+2'ers, I have still run it up several thousand dollars. That's not counting free gifts and goodies. |

Re: I don\'t believe stories about how much people win. Do you?
It's easily explained if he "got lucky" and won a very large tournament with a reasonably low buy-in or some promotional freeroll. If I had won the UB million dollar freeroll a month ago instead of placing 500th- I could make the same claim. First prize was $500,000. But, to grind 50 dollars into 500,000 over a two-year period at cash tables is unlikely, especially considering he had never played seriously before. I think I've read that Chris Furgeson (sp?) is attempting something like this at FT- to turn 0 into a hundred thousad or more- but after a year, he's at 10,000.
Anybody who's not addicted to losing money, literate (has read at least one good poker book), and plays at limits below their playing ability can maintain a bankroll. |
