AT halftime of Duke/NCSt game they just reported that SI interviewed Tomlin and he said that IT IS NOT TRUE THAT HE HAS BEEN NAMED STEELERS COACH.

Hope they didn't. This just doesn't seem to be a great decision.

I don't like this at all.

1)Tomlin is a 4-3 guy. A big question will be does he want Pittsburgh to change into a 4-3 is Tomlin going to have to learn the 3-4? Either way, it sucks.

2)Tomlin's secondary has been horrible in Minnesota. That's the Steelers biggest weakness on D. That part doesn't make sense either. (I'll give him his TB time though as a little slack)

3)6 whole years of NFL experience and never once a player in the NFL. Just doesn't seem to fit the mold for the Steelers at all.

===========

I'm also adding that I don't believe the SI article yet. It makes no sense to name Tomlin the HC when they want to talk to Rivera again and not waiting at least till Monday to see if they can. Tomlin ain't going anywhere over the weekend.

[/ QUOTE ]

Tomlin made statements about the system fittng the personnel not vice versa when he talked to the Pittsburgh media after his initial interviews.

I thought his secondary was supposedly pretty average but appeared worse through conventional stats because nobody would attempt to run on them.

I think Tomlin is the best option out of the short list that the Steelers announced Monday. Grimm sounds like a C student in his interviews, and Rivera is a true Cover 2 guy whose deficiencies have been masked by superior personnel.

Just FYI, Minnesota ranked 16th against the pass this year according to DVOA, 1st in rush defense and 4th overall.

Hmm.. just got back and saw all this. I still think they hire Tomlin. Someone probably got a little ansey and let it slip too soon. I think it's a good hire. I saw where he had talked about the system fitting the players and not the other way around. The Steelers can stay a 3-4 team. Especially if they can keep LeBeau around. Any word on whether he stays? Only if Grimm is HC?

I thought the word was early on that Lebeau would stay no matter who was coach as long as that coach didn't tell him how to run the defense. It remains to be seen if Tomlin will keep him or not.

Apparently, ESPN is reporting Tomlin is the coach.

I don't understand hiring a defensive coach when you would have LeBeau around. Just promote LeBeau and find a good offensive coordinator.

It will be interesting to see how many Pittsburgh assistants end up in Arizona.

Lebeau is old, not interested in being a head coach, and not very good at it. My hope is that Tomlin keeps Lebeau and they can work together to develop more of a hybrid defense. Lebeau has indicated that he is happy staying on as D Coord, and would be open to some change. However, I'm sure the decision would be Tomlin's.
