[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] we'd have to average making $245 when we hit a set. how often do you think he's losing half his stack when we flop a set? [/ QUOTE ] no we dont have to make that much because sometimes we can win without a set. [/ QUOTE ] ok i guess it's an obvious call then.... [/ QUOTE ] 7.5-1 against hitting a set should be 180 - 24. Where are you getting 245? |

Re: Hand reading quiz
3-betting midpairs out of the BB is of course an option but you have to ask yourself why you do so. Whenever you 3-bet a hand like 77 it's because a) you want to mix it up, perhaps haven't 3-bet in a while and b) you think that particular opponent is eploitable enough postflop to make it a justifiable play. Against someone who is very stubborn in 3-bet pots in position or if there is a fair risk of being 4-bet you always want to cold call, like here

Bozzer,
Subject:Hand reading quiz. Where are you getting 245? Shouldn't it be 180? Since 7.5-1 is like 180-24? |

I would think you would calculate it like this. It is 7.5 to 1 against hitting a set. 21(was using 24 before because I didn't notice we were in the small blind) is multiplied by 7.5 to get what we need to win the pot. That's how pot odds works. You need to have at least the same odds on the call as your odds of hitting the hand. |

Re: Hand reading quiz
Its a kinda pointless hand in a vacuum without any other history or reads. That said, its a strange value bet on the river because you would think most small pps or a 3 or 4 would just check behind as they have reasonable showdown value - 77 could make a thin value bet so maybe you both have the same hand.
Unless he is getting super tricky with a flopped monster and is inducing a river checkraise bluff but without any specific history that seems like a bit of a stretch. |

Re: Hand reading quiz
Can someone please verify that the last post I made was a correct statement. If it isn't I may just pack up and go to the mental institution.

Re: Hand reading quiz
re calling for set odds - the point is that most good players are opening such a wide range that you dont have the implied odds necessary to call for purely set value as you wont be taking their stack often enough even if you do flop a set.
that said, I think folding 77 there is really on the nitty side, I dont mind calling and playing poker but if you arent comfortable postlop and oop then I guess there could be a case for pitching it. |
