It's the same reason you raise in LHE with 7 limpers with QQ.

Your hand stands to be best post-flop more often than any other hand in the ranges of the limpers, so you take the +EV edge.

Shaundeeb, do you raise more if you were in the SB instead of the button, as it would be much less easy to play oop?

it's a known psych thing that when it's 1 chip to call people are more likely to call. It's more for live but can have a similar effect online. When you raise to 600 it's just 1 500 chip thus to a novice player which most of these limpers prob are they see it more as a 1 chip raise then a 6x bb raise.

Basically you get more calls theoretically when yo have a 1 chip raise there was a good BBV post showing this where some random guy at nlo8 would raise .25 limps 25$ and get lots of calls from hands that didn't deserve it. Experiment with betting for a while betting 699 instead of 750 would get more folds due to larger chip stack as an animation. I think vs good thinking players it has reversed a bit.

thanks for the explanation shaun.

however, id still like to see someone compare and contrast the EV of trying to raise to hopefully get Heads Up with a player (or take the pot down preflop), or, what you seem to be suggesting, create an enormous multi-way pot. Thoughts?

When I raise to weird numbers, people seem to call.

Ditto for raising exactly the amount of villain's chip stack. Never quite understood why.

Shaun,
At what raise amount do the reverse implied odds make it worse? I worded that badly, but lets say worse than pushing preflop or getting hu something. I'm thinking that 300-500 would be -EV if you stack off on most non-AK boards. To simplify lets say everyone has 3k stacks.

sledge if you play well postflop reverse implied odds shouldn't really be a factor with these stack sizes unless your hand is face up etc. People will go broke with tp and draws everytime they flop even though its 5 way they are like AI have a gutshot allin.

I raise to 1000 in these spots, most of the time I get two callers, one with an underpair and one with suited connectors. If you get reraised to your 1000 bet it's probably Ax so jam and laugh when he calls, and cry when he hits.
