How do they solve the land problem?

They build massive space colonies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_(The_Culture)

Violence is hard because the machines are so godlike that they will typically be able to intervene, and medical tech is so advanced that people are tough to kill or permanently injure. If you are repeatedly violent then a drone (robot) follows you everywhere and stops you.

Wrote this down while tripping on acid one time after watching a nova special on dog evolution. Enjoy if you have the courage to read it...

I came up with the premise while contemplating human evolution, dog evolution, and the evolution of the vast majority of other species on the planet. It seems interesting to me that the human mind is so complex that a number of different traits are seen as desirable for sexual reproduction, partly because of the fact that wealth created by capitalism has made it possible for nearly human to pass on their genes regardless of their actual survival skills. For instance, only the strongest, fastest, most intelligent and most cooperative wolves can survive in the wild, thus making wolves very homogenous in appearance and nature. Dogs, on the other hand, survive as a result of their usefulness to humans, whether it is for hunting or as entertainment (how else would a 4 pound Chihuahua exist). Now I realize that is partly irrelevant to human evolution (assuming, of course, that eugenics isn’t practiced) because the evolution of dogs is the result eugenics practiced by humans. This got me thinking, though. What if one sector of the human population breeds based on a closely selected set of traits, and another sector of the population breeds based on a more random set of traits.

How will the humans divide into subspecies?

The answer to this is government, more specifically the welfare state. The preceding led me to think of how, because it is possible to live your entire life off the government dime, it isn’t really necessary to mate with someone who is intelligent, ambitious, personable, or even attractive because of the fact that you can live off of the people who share these characteristics. In fact, the former group is actually more successful in a biological sense than the latter group (they breed at a much faster rate). Add to this the fact that (because of the incentive structure) it is far more difficult to go from living off the government to supporting yourself than vice-versa and you have a massively expanding class of people. This, not coincidentally, leads to the massive expanse in the size of government and the amount of people living off that government. Additionally, social norms dissuade those from the capitalist class from breeding with those in the socialist class which eventually completely separates the gene pool. The only interbreeding occurs when a member of the capitalist class is not up to standards for breeding, in which case he breeds with the socialist class out of desperation. By this time in the future, the capitalist subspecies is only a minute fraction of the socialist subspecies.

Ultra-advanced technology has made it possible for this small fraction of the population to support the entire earth. Because the socialist class has strength in numbers and the control of government’s military strength, pushing for a free society is impossible for the capitalist subspecies and will almost certainly lead to their extinction (well, extermination, more specifically). Government regulates everything stringently, particularly technological advances that are counterproductive for the socialist subspecies like the spread of information. There is still a free market for food production and other life essentials, however. Advances in these fields are how a small fraction of the population can sustain the other large portion.

Essentially, individuals within the capitalist subspecies are slaves to their own superior skills. Because of the fact that the socialist class has developed to be lazier, less intelligent, and more self destructive (drug use and suicide are common among this subspecies) they will almost certainly perish with the extinction of the capitalist subspecies. This entire premise takes the parasitic nature of government and expands it into a parasitic relationship that you would see in biology - like the one between a dog and a whip worm. The other interesting aspect of this theory is the comparision between the two human subspecies (capitalist and socialist class) and the two wolf subspecies (dogs and wolves). The more domesticated version survives better than the stronger and more intelligent subspecies. The analogy goes like this; human is to dog as government is to lower subspecies of human. In this way humans will slowly, not quickly as many predict today, cause their own demise.

This goes down in roughly 15,000 years... it's the human dystopian version of the 'big freeze'. Oh yeah, and like six months later I heard about the movie Idiocracy.

oh yeah, I also forgot to add that eventually the earth swallows the sun, our galaxy collides with another and the expansion of the universe accelerates to a point where even if we build a ship that travels at the speed of light we'll never go anywhere but into nothingness. Which is precisely what what our robot decendants become

1. Crystal Pepsi will be re-introduced for a limited time as some kind of retro marketing thing.

2. Rob Zombie will direct a re-make of Halloween 2, where we will be treated to the back story of Jimmy the ambulance driver.

3. Republican President elected in 2008 and war with Iran by 2010.

We should get some kick ass technology in the next 20-30 years, maybe we'll be able to upload our brains into bots and live forever.. but who would want too?

And then the Big Rip happens. Basically in about 50 billion years, all matter is torn asunder from the outside of the universe in. As the rate of the expansion of the universe increases, none of the forces that hold the universe or matter together can sustain. Even atoms themselves are eventually ripped apart. It will look like a big black wave of nothingness, sweeping from the outer edges of the universe inward.

Kinda spooky to think about.
