Re: A more interesting baseball question
Something I was recently considering:
Bottom of the 9th inning, 1 out, man on third, tie game. The batter hits a long fly to center. The center fielder, knowing that if he catches the ball, the runner will easily tag and score. Could the fielder purposely bobble the ball up to himself while he runs closer and closer to the infield while never gaining control of it until he gets close enough to throw the runner out if he tries to tag up? It seems like a decent strategy to me, I'm not sure why the winning run always scores so easily on these types of plays. |

Re: A more interesting baseball question
On a side note, it is stuff like this that makes baseball the greatest game ever and everything else suck in comparison.

Re: A more interesting baseball question

Okay, how about a more far-fetched question along the same lines. Let's say the CF was running to the ball, except his hat fell off on the way. Unfortunately, he grossly misjudged the ball and it landed in his hat without touching the ground. What happens then? [/ QUOTE ] It would be a live ball with no penalty to the fielder. The action must be deliberate to be penalized. |

Re: A more interesting baseball question
Didn't Helton try to throw his glove at an errant pickoff attempt?

Re: A more interesting baseball question
I am pretty sure El Duque as a Yankee has tossed his glove with the ball in it to first, and the runner was called out.

Re: A more interesting baseball question
this is different. we're talking about trying to get the ball by throwing the glove at the ball, not throwing the ball with the glove.
