You here right now?

Also, Uruguay is just Argentina light. Much like Canada is America light. They are just as retarded and horrible at business though.

How do you mean? They miss opportunities? They don't follow up their words with actions like North Amis would?

I wouldn't say Argentines are retarded or horrible at doing business. Their business and work ethic is different than in the U.S. or Western Europe, that's for sure.

People here are much more laid back, which will result in people not being places "on the dot" as you'd expect in a city like New York or L.A.

Business is quite "shady" though...people will try to cheat you, short change you, etc. if they get a hint that you're a foreigner. I've had people short change me a few times and I'm positive they weren't honest mistakes. Also be very cautious when renting an apartment, read the contract carefully for any loopholes and ask an Argentine friend to accompany you for the signing. And make sure you ALWAYS ask for an official receipt! I've been given fake ones because people try to dodge paying taxes here. If you get summoned to court the unofficial (fake) receipt will be worthless and you may end up owing money you have already paid. From what I hear the courts here don't care about what you say, it's all about what is on paper. No receipt = no case.

All deals are done in U.S. dollars cash, so if you buy an apartment you must show up with a suitcase full of cash. There will be a dispute regarding whose bank the deal is done it because nobody trusts one another.

This isn't because the people are retarded at doing business, it's only because they have no faith in the stability of their country (or lack of). Don't forget, 5 years ago there was a complete economic collapse and many people lost their life savings. $Dollars are the safest currency they can get and they'll do whatever they can to get it.

I just left. If you have a room for rent in the summer, I'd pick it up!

Here are some photos I've taken in Buenos Aires:

Parque Las Heras in Palermo. Palermo is my favorite neighborhood in BsAs. Recoleta is very nice but it's more "old money" while Palermo is where the "new money" resides. Thus you have more young people, clubs, bars, boutiques, etc.

Avenida 9 de Julio, the widest street in the world.

Avenida Libertador in Palermo.

The Metetron,

I'm currently set up to study in BA as a study-abroad student in the Fall of '07. Two questions:

1) Would you reccomend living in an apartment or doing a homestay?

2) How are the gym\health clubs there? I'm a varsity athlete and while my season is mainly in Spring, its expected that we stay in great shape. Obviously running\biking shouldn't be too hard, but I'm specifically wondering if you've seen any rowing machines down there. I know this is a weird question, and you not having seen one certainly doesn't mean they don't have them, but I figured I'd give it a shot.

I'd get coxquinn to answer this as he's studying abroad here at the moment. I could never live in a homestay after getting the feel for my own apartment. I just like my own personal space too much and my apartment is so much nicer than anyone's homestay room I've seen. Plus getting girls to come back here is much easier.

That said, the vast majority of people studying abroad do the homestay, so you wouldn't be out of place. Also, it has the benefits of people speaking Spanish to you more and of people cooking you dinner every night. Still, going out to eat is usually only around $10 for a nice restaurant, so you'll probably want to be eating out a lot anyways.

My apartment has a basic gym on the roof level, so I don't really know much about outside gyms. I have friends here who have gym memberships and I think they paid about $30/mo for a pretty comprehensive gym with swimming pools, basketball courts, etc. No idea if that has rowing machines. There are a lot of gyms here though, so I'm sure you could take some tours and find one that has the things you need.

Hey I'm visiting Buenos Aires this May and I was just wondering if there is anything that people think that I absolutely must do? Right now, my plan is to also visit Mendoza and the Iguazu Falls.

Also, are there any live cash games that go on there? I wouldn't mind hitting up some live poker games. Thanks.

I know a place in Recoleta that hosts poker games every Sunday (and other nights by request). It's run by a group of Americans. PM me if you'd like some more details.

There's a game at Casino Puerto Madero every night. AR$1000 buyin, game lasts 2 hours (a new one usually starts after), AR$25 antes, no blinds, last street aggressor acts first on the next street, 5% uncapped rake.
