More like he completely misunderstands what "luck" or "variance" is referring to in this context.

Just responding to his comment that Oakland could only win over the Twins by being lucky because the Twins were clearly better. Considering how evenly matched most people considered the series, it wasn't a very intelligent statement.

Btw, that five games series was won in three.

Not really, the quote wasn't meant that way. He did not mean variance. When you say one team is clearly better than another and that they can only win with luck, you aren't talking about variance.

But I'm fairly sure that quote originated from his utter misunderstanding of what someone else meant when "luck" was referenced. You could probably find the exact post if you wanted.
