For the record I would not be combining Lee and Li. It's different in English, live with it. Sean and Shawn are not the same name

[ QUOTE ] Scoring them separately is equally unfair though. [/ QUOTE ] It's NOT unfair. Not even a little bit. YOU knew that they were different spellings of the same Chinese name. So did alex jacob, and a few others. MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THAT Part of sheep is knowing how people will respond. You should have known that if it was between Lee and Li that Lee would win. [/ QUOTE ] We were asked for the NAME, not the English spellings of the NAME. The NAME is correctly spelled with a Chinese character. Since none of us could type that character even if we wanted to, we type an English "spelling" of that name, but the fact that there are multiple potential spellings doesn't change that it's all one name. You might be aware that many actual English words have different spellings for the same word. If a question were asked where some people answered "judgement" and others answered "judgment" would they be counted differently? Of course not, and this is the exact same thing! |

For the record I would not be combining Lee and Li. It's different in English, live with it. Sean and Shawn are not the same name [/ QUOTE ] the question didn't ask for english spellings of chinese surnames, it asked for chinese surnames thats the problem here, is that people keep trying to compare this to english, when they can't, because Chinese isn't written phonetically or semi-phonetically like English is, its written using characters. The character for the surname Lee and Li is the EXACT same (right?), but when translated into English it can be spelled different ways. That doesn't change the fact that Lee and Li refer to the exact same Chinese surname and should therefore be lumped together. |

I suppose technically that's correct. I interpreted the question as "what's a common surname for an asian person". But since the question was "what's a common asian surname" then I guess lee/li is the same.
HOWEVER, complaining about it for 2 pages is nitty as hell and if I were mod I'd just pwnstick any whiners and kick them out of the game. Be happy terp is nice. Seriously, I wish I could make all of you stfu. There's always retarded bitching after every sheep game |

For what it's worth, I've never seen Bruce Lee written as Bruce Li, and I've never seen Jet Li written as Jet Lee. Are they interchangeable?
I chose Lee... went to Wiki to confirm my answer and saw that the pronunciations and such were similar to Li... still felt Lee was the best answer, but I did wonder if Li would be included. |

[/ QUOTE ] I believe it's that people from different regions have different tendencies in how they choose to represent their name and everyone just goes along with what that person chooses for themselves. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Come on. You really don't think I try to run this game as fairly as I can? [/ QUOTE ] I don't see how you could possibly think I would given the current circumstances. Since no one else seems to care, I might as well drop it though. [/ QUOTE ] Alex, I think you're out of line questioning Terp's integrity. I think Terp does know that he was wrong, but thinks that since he already ruled on this to people via PM, that correcting it would be even worse. Its a tough spot to be in. [/ QUOTE ] Actually, thinking about this more, I think you're right that I was wrong to question his intergrity, but you're wrong thinking he knows he was wrong. His solution seems fair to him because he doesn't think he was wrong to separate the spellings. |
