Looking at VerizonWireless.com their voice plans start at 39.99 for 450 minutes, their smartphone/pda plans start at 79.99 for 450 minutes plus data. You aren't getting unlimited data for 5 bucks.

I have an Env, so I'm not required to get a smartphone/PDA plan.

I get the $39.99 plan for voice

$5 plan for unlimited email and web access. minutes come off my plan.

$10 plan for Unlimited IN Messaging, plus 500 additional messages.

I txt message a lot and very frequently am online to check email and baseball scores.

my bill is always right around $60/month, hidden charges + fees + etc charges included.

So you're comparing a crappy regular phone interface to mail and the phone version of web pages, if they will show at all. I would say it's apples to oranges but puns aren't funny.

get Sprint SERO plan; $30/month for unlimited data, 500 anytime mins, free roaming/free long distance/free nights/weekends ($50 if u want 1250 anytime mins instead)

u can get the motorola Q for $99, but rebates will more than take care of that

i post on 2+2 a lot on my phone; view youtube via orb; u can stream your tv/dvr to it with a slingbox; etc etc...gets around 800kb/sec, so not as fast as 3g, but fast enough

Do you work for Apple or something? Why do you care so much if he uses Verizon? You fanboys are kinda sad.

it would be apples - oranges if you were comparing a crappy web experience to a good one. but Safari + Edge will not add up to a good web experience at all. at the end of the day, I'm not sure which web experience will be better: 3g w/ crappy verizon interface or edge + sweet iphone interface. I would probably give edge to iphone, but not enough to justify $40 instead of $5 or $10. or a $500 phone instead of a $50 or $100 phone.

the $40 data plan wouldn't be nearly as offensive if

a) it wasn't mandatory
b) the iphone was on a high speed network

I use edge data quite a bit and it's really not bad. I just did a bandwidth test on dslreports and got 248 kbit/sec. 3g usually gets between 900-1000. It's obviously slower, but a lot of people act like it's totally unusable and I don't get it. I've posted on twoplustwo, searched google, etc. Now I agree that it is weak sauce that iphone doesn't have 3g, but I don't think it is as big a knock as you (and a ton of others, so I'm not singling you out) are making it out to be.

Bleh, iphone looks great, but honestly all I want it for is widescreen/touchscreen ipod and wireless internet use.

It would be pretty sick if they allow wifi ability on the new widescreen ipods, whenever they come out anyway.
