In Japan, they have a 6 man rotation and play only 6 games per week and the season is only 135 games. On the flip side starters are expected to pitch deeper.

When he got here there was a lot of concern over his workout regiment which management thought was too strenous. I believe they cut him back a little bit but clearly he has hit a wall. They should definitely let him miss a start as a minimum to see if he can get back some effectiveness.

I also think they need to work on his mental approcach to the game. I think he internally goes on tilt when he gets squeezed or perceives he's getting squeezed by the umps. that's why even when he was pitching well, he alwasy seemed to have one horrendous inning.

dice-k is on my fantasy team, so this is somewhat relevant discussion for me.

i think the real deal in his innings, etc. is that he never really had any IP limit since he was 19. sure, they only pitch once a week, but it's over a shorter season, and 240 IP at age 21 is just not healthy. and of course he had injuries the following year.

here's another thing that worries me, his number of pitches per start. it's somewhat normal for pitchers of his caliber to stay in there for 100, 110, 120 pitches, but consider this, santana went over 110 pitches once in all of April/May/June, and Beckett did it only twice and not before June. it seems that now they have stretched their arms and can do it 2-3 times a month. matsuzaka had seven games before July 1st, and that's counting three 120 pitch games and a 130! pitch game.

NO WONDER he is gassed by now.

it's not that i think the coaches have mismanaged him. they knew all of this much better than the fans and they took a calculated risk. it's just that any arm can only take so much abuse and everyone better hope mats can rest it enough in the off-season.

I wasn't trying to be funny, just trying to say that if you used 2p2 correctly it would have been on the first page already.
