Re: *official 2007 red sox thread*
The obvious solution seems to be to give him a start or two off and see what happens when he comes back. The Red Sox being the Red Sox, though, will probably insist nothing is wrong and continue to run him out there.

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I think Youk at 3b and Dunn at 1b isn't so crazy, and projects better than Lowell/Youk I think. [/ QUOTE ] Why is every Sox fan/media muppet ready to get rid of Lowell? He is consistent at the plate and (this year) solid in the field. By all accounts, he is the ultimate professional. He's a great fit in the five-hole. He even said he prefers the five-hole. In OPS, he's having a better year than Youk (and Manny Ramirez). This is a career year for Lowell. Let's not worry about 3rd base for at least the next two seasons. We got bigger problems. [/ QUOTE ] last year his contract was an albatross, now 1 season later after a career year at age 34 we're going to give him 3/36 or something? that doesnt seem prudent. [/ QUOTE ] Wouldn't go as far as to say last year was an albatross...Sure his 2nd half was bad but he still ended up .284 20HR 80RBI which is WAY more than anyone could have hoped before last season [/ QUOTE ] Lowells .eqa since he turned 25: .252 .277 .274 .286 .299 .297 .240 (last year in Florida) .279 (1st year in Boston) .306 (this year) the Lowell we saw last year is basically the one we will see going forward. He wasn't nearly as bad as his last Florida year, and he is unlikely to repeat this year. |

Re: *official 2007 red sox thread*
i wouldnt mind having lowell on the team, but signing him to the money he will command is a job left to the giants or some other team run bad.

Re: *official 2007 red sox thread*
signing lowell would be dumb unless theres just no market for him
his age 34-36 seasons prob arent gonna have a total OPS much higher than like 750 and UZR didnt like him even when he wasnt ancient lowells been ridic this season but short of signing arod that production isnt coming back next year |

Re: *official 2007 red sox thread*
there's no doubt that a two year deal for lowell probably won't be worth it in terms of MORP or whatever. the problem is, what option is better for 3B for next year? if they're not going to sign him they either need to get A-Rod (which is sketchy at best) or look into a trade, because there's not really anybody in the pipeline.
i would rather watch john henry overpay for mile lowell (who i like a lot anyway) than watch the sox give some AAAA CI 500 AB's next year and waste the talent they have at other positions. it's not my money. now i would rather see them get a legit young CI than either of those, i just don't know where he's going to come from if they do. |

[/ QUOTE ] it's not just overpaying though, it's having an expensive guy on your roster for 2 more years that may become difficult to trade that is a problem. ie Johnny Damon. anyways, they have a fair bit of flexibility b/c of Youk. they basically need to find a good 3b OR 1b via free agency, trade (perhaps they cant get a comparable value for Crisp?), or their system (bare I think, but there is an outside chance the guy they acquired for Wily Mo will be in the mix next year. I guess I'm saying a creative front office with money to spend will likey come up with a better option than signing a decent 34 YO to a big money 3 or 4 year deal. |

Re: *official 2007 red sox thread*
youkilis + carter is prob like 15 runs/yr worse than youkilis + lowell over the next two years. they got carter for free, it shouldnt be hard to find someone better than carter without giving up much. ned coletti probably doesnt need much convincing to believe that jon lester is worth andy laroche.

Re: *official 2007 red sox thread*
yeah i should be clear, lowell for 4 years is murder. i was hoping to get him for like 2, which is probably not that likely.
