If the Cubs end up holding on it will only be because the Brewers are even more inept at winning baseball games

yeah, but who cares?

making the playoffs is what counts

look at the number of wildcard and 3rd best division champ WS winners and participants of late

QFT

It's completely cliche and corny to say, but every team starts with a 0-0 record in October. The most important part is making sure you are one of the 8 teams that gets to keep playing.

2006: 3rd best division team beat AL wild card
2005: Best AL division team beat NL wild card
2004: AL Wild card beats 1st NL divsion team
2003: NL wild card beats 1st AL division team
2002: AL wild card beats NL wild card
2001: 2nd NL division beat 2nd AL division

Just get in, then anything can happen.

At least Dempster is pitching himself out of the closer role.

Amazingly, BP now gives the Cubs the best chance at making the playoffs of any NL team

Cubs 92.9%
DBacks 82.9%
Padres 65.6%
Phils 59.1%
Mets 58.5%
Rockies 33.9%

If Lou was going to pull him, he would have done it by now. Dempster has given him plenty of reasons and opportunities. I just hope he is not closing next year, at least not for the Cubs. I mean, he would be an improvement over Borowski in Cleveland.

We will clinch today. Zambrano needs to come up big and Maddux needs to come up a lot bigger than he did for us in 89. He has owned the brewers over his career though.

I am 37 years old and the Cubs have won exactly two division championships while I have been alive. This is a big deal to me.

Did your mom throw away your baseball card collection including your Paul Reuschel rookie card?

I don't want to hear about your pain.

That's weird. I'm 30 and the Cubs have won 3 division championships while I have been alive.

Edited to add: I'm not counting this year yet. I'm just counting 2003 in addition to 1984 and 1989.

You are right, it is three. Not sure why I did not count 2003. Probably because my mind is trying to subconsciously block all memory of that year.

2003 was a great ride right up until the 8th inning of game 6. I try to block everything out after that, but up until then WOW. I loved '84 because that was the first year I was really a baseball fan, but I was 26 and living in the city in 2003, so I enjoyed the ride a lot more that year.

It's not bad enough that Lou insists on playing Kendall over Blanco (better D) and Soto (better hitter). No, he compounds the problem by batting him 2nd. Because having Kendall hit a grounder to the right side with a runner on 2nd is much more important than having someone in that spot who can actually drive the ball out of the infield. Or God forbid draw a walk. Lou says [censored] that noise; he wants to maximize the AB's of the worst (at least bottom 5) hitter in MLB.

Edit - Floyd 4th, Ramirez 5th. [censored] it, just kill me now and get it over with.

if you're going to bitch about stupid managers you should probably know that batting order doesn't matter statistically.
