OK, if chuckles' theories are right, and I think they are, the key here is to narrow things down to some sort of list that the person is on, and then go by name on that list.

on that basis, if you're looking at famous people, male/female isn't a great split either. Maybe staight male?

Hmm

Do we now try to divide by country, and then find a list of political figures in a given country, or do we divide by role, and find a list by role?

If the person wasn't a head of state or head of government, the latter would be harder.
