A-Rod opted out. This means Boras knows he can get more than 8/$230m the Yanks were allegedly offering. It also means I have been totally WRONG with every post on this thread. I didn't think A-rod would go to a marginal team. I thought teams were smart enough to realize that A-rod has big injury and performance decline risks on any long term deal given his age. I can only hope the D'Backs sign him and win two or three WS and deal with the decline in five or six years! .

We gave our free agent money to, gulp, Eric Byrnes. Unlike A-Rod, he hustles on every play! He hustles on foul balls. He hustles into the dug out and the rest room! He hustles into strikeouts!

I'm not as down on that Byrnes contract as I was at first. If this means we can deal Quentin/Gonzalez/Cunningham/Parra for a cheap replacement for Livan Hernandez, it will help out big time in the short run, and won't have too much of an impact in the long run.
